Hey Bethany, can you introduce yourself to us?
My name is Bethany Harrogate, I’m 24 years old and I run a business called Discover Your Chakras. I have two children and a fiancé who I live within Queenstown New Zealand. I work with the Chakras in the energy body to create healing and soul-aligned lifestyles for women in business.
I’m a Reiki practitioner and I blend this with my own method of healing, which I have created through my study and practice with balancing the Chakras. I’m passionate about creating and facilitating transformation for female entrepreneurs. I help them to clear away any past trauma or limitations that may be causing subconscious resistance or holding them back from up-leveling.
Can you take us through your journey to where you are now?
There were a few key points in my journey that really stick out as building blocks for where I am now. When I was seven years old, there was a store I used to visit that sold crystals and incense. It had a little treatment room out the back and this is where I first came across Reiki.
A few years later, I had my first deck of Oracle cards and I really became aware of the universe and our capabilities as powerful beings, to shape our own lives and outcomes. When I was seventeen I began to study the Chakras with my first mentor Rachel and I started to work with the law of attraction, creating and shaping my reality.
A few years later, after having my first baby and slowly returning to ‘myself’, my old habits and spiritual practices. I came back to my foundations of Chakra and energy work. I started working with energy again and I started to experiment with how far I could go and what I could achieve. I looked at what is possible with the Chakra energies. I found new ways to re-align, balance and heal my body at a physical and energetic level.
I also took my Reiki level 2 training and this blended so beautifully with all of the tools I already had and all of the things I was currently doing in my practices. Reiki expanded my thinking and my awareness.
What’s the process from start to finish on setting up your business Discover Your Chakras?
It was a personal development journey to get to the stage where I was ready and actually setting up a business. Initially, I offered free readings to women in exchange for feedback and testimonials, to make sure that what I am doing was well received and that I am a clear channel, able to give that guidance.
Then I took the next leap after I got an intuitive nudge to begin using my own method of energy healing, which until this point had been for close friends and family only. This was scary but I trusted my intuitive hit, went for it and the first ladies I began working with loved it.
The next thing I did was conduct research interviews in exchange for a free 1:1 session. This gave me an amazing insight into the scope of how I could help these ladies with their healing and growth.
I saw a lot of demand for ladies not really knowing where to start when it comes to the Chakras, so I created my first beta course and successfully ran it with 10 ladies, who gave me feedback about their experience and results.
While I collated that feedback and worked on the iterations, I crafted my 1:1 offering and began working with clients each week to make incremental changes to their energy, heal their pain and allow them to create the business and lifestyle that they dream of!
Can you tell us more about the brand DNA and ethos of Discover Your Chakras?
Discover Your Chakras is about empowering women by putting them back in the driver’s seat and helping them to take charge of their own healing journey. It’s about creating a bridge so that everyone can connect to themselves at a core, fundamental level and that spirituality in all its forms is accessible.
One of the purposes, and why I started this business is to give women the connection to their soul-self, invoke their divine feminine power and create the transformation their soul desires to live a life that is of their own design.
Where can you see yourself within the next 3-5 years?
In the next few years, I would love to travel more often and take part in some speaking events to change the way we view and see spirituality and energy work. At a fundamental level, I want to help to heal and empower as many women as possible.
Can you highlight 3 common misconceptions about Chakras and energy healing?
- You don’t have to be in the same room to heal someone’s energy, you can do it online by tapping into oneness. To explain how this works I’ll get a bit sciencey, so basically, the quantum theory explains it as one particle being able to sense the activity of another particle that could be close to it or millions of light years away. This has been called ‘non-local reality’ meaning that everyone and everything is inseparable and exist in oneness. Non-locality means we can be both here and everywhere at the same time.
- Modern science actually supports energy healing and Chakra work, for example, biologists have connected the Chakras to our nervous system and each one has a corresponding endocrine gland, basically meaning they (the Chakras) are involved with our bodies electromagnetic functions. Dr. Richard Gerber (advocate and practitioner of vibrational medicine) suggests that the Chakras help us operate at a vibrational level, that we just can’t perceive with our five physical senses. That the Chakras take that and translate it into hormonal, biological and cellular energy.
- 3. There are more than the main seven Chakras (taken from the traditional Hindu system) that are most commonly talked about. Personally, I work with thirteen Chakras, including the higher-heart, hands, and feet. Some cultures actually have over 20 Chakras in their systems.
Who does the team involve behind you?
My partner Dan has been a huge help to me and I feel very lucky to have him, he has been working on building my new website, helps me out with advice and a few things behind the scenes. For everything else, it’s just me!
What are the key tools that you use for your trade?
Zoom, this software allows me to do 1:1 sessions, webinars and record all of my client sessions.
Calendly, this has been an incredible piece of software that has kept all of my bookings and appointments organised and made my sessions streamlined. It’s especially handy because it syncs with my calendar, which keeps me organised too!
What outlets do use to market Discover Your Chakras?
At the moment I mostly use my Facebook page, Instagram, post in a few Facebook groups and send out a weekly newsletter to my subscribers. People often find me through downloading my free grounding guide, this teaches my top three grounding techniques, including the one I use in the first session with my clients.
These outlets have given me a lot of success so far and proven my ethos of not needing to have a huge marketing budget or website to be successful and start a business. My new website has just gone live through and I think that’s going to be a huge help for me going forward, now that I am ready to grow and expand.
What or who inspires and motives you?
I adore women in business who are going against the grain, not afraid to be raw, transparent and say it how it is! These women are changing the world. One of these women is Natasha Corbin, I’m proud to say she’s my business mentor and all-around amazing lady who specialises in helping heart-centered entrepreneurial women achieve amazing things. There’s also Tori Crewes, a lady I follow online and admire for leading the charge on creating a business as individual as you are, not a job and creating her ‘soul empire’.
I’m also hugely motivated by my kids, more specifically, they inspire me to lead from the front and show them what is possible when you combine your passions and your purpose and keep going no matter what. They encourage me to set the example and show them that there are many different types of success and you can be a young mum and a successful entrepreneur. I have a son and a daughter, so, with all of the things going on in the world today, I look at them and I think ‘wow.’ I really gotta’ show these kids how to set their expectations, what to accept and how to treat people. I have to be the example, the one to walk my talk and show up every day as my best self.
Finally, there’s Dan, my partner who I mentioned earlier. He saw the potential in me and knew I could do it. When I wanted to shrink myself, he encouraged me to be visible and become a leader. He inspires me to be the woman he thinks I am. To have his support is as invaluable as it is inspiring.
What is the number 1 critical business lesson you have learned so far?
Everything is practice. Your audience will never be as small as they are today, so don’t be afraid to trial things and refine them.
A seminal point in your career so far?
The thing I am most proud of and something that I feel makes what I do so unique, is that I have created my own method of healing. There is no-one else out there that does what I do and I think that is pretty freakin’ cool! I am learning to celebrate my successes and ‘wins’ instead of being ashamed or hiding it through fear of being seen as ‘tooting my own horn’. That’s been a pretty powerful transition too.
What gives you ultimate career satisfaction?
When my ladies achieve exactly what they set out to do, they’re living their dreams, healing their stories and they have fun doing it!
What challenges have you seen to have been presented during the growth of your business?
What I call ‘egg weeks’ ($0) in the first part of my business was hard, from a mindset perspective. Riding the self-employed rollercoaster of some weeks being flush and others I’d barely cover my expenses. This was hard and took a while for me to master my mindset and to learn to forecast and plan ahead so I always had my bases covered.
Which other leading entrepreneurs and pioneering game changers do you also admire and why?
There are so many amazing and inspiring ladies coming through at the moment, that I’m pretty sure are going to change the world. I just love that we’re seeing more and more women using their positions of power to empower and inspire other women to grow, stand tall, celebrate themselves and create their own opportunities.
One lady who is definitely worth mentioning is Claudia Martinez. She’s the Reiki Master and Yogi that I am studying with currently. Her work is so powerful. She is healing and guiding so many women on their journeys and using that platform to create her lifestyle of travelling and seeing the world.
What is a good article or book you have read recently?
I have recently read Jonathan Livingston Seagull for the third time, it’s just that good! It’s a short, metaphorical book about a seagull who goes against the grain and embarks on a journey of life lessons. He looks at what his flock says are his limitations and he tries to shrink himself to fit their narrative and stay accepted as part of the flock.
But eventually, he can’t live as someone else and tries to go beyond what others have set as his limitations, and ultimately, well I don’t want to give away the ending, but I feel like I can relate to what he went through, and I’d highly recommend reading it!
Top go-to Podcast channels?
- ‘The Tim Ferriss Show’ as I love listening to him talk to some of the worlds most successful entrepreneurs, industry experts, and inspiring people and get into what their processes, philosophies, and values are.
- ‘The Heart-Centered Business Podcast.’ I love how Tash really breaks down the burning questions for women who are in business and is totally transparent about her own numbers, business planning, and processes that see her successfully running an incredibly profitable business.
How do you define your own success?
By how abundant I am feeling, regardless of income. Success is about how I feel. If I am living the lifestyle I enjoy, facilitating outcomes for my clients and spending the time I want to, with my family, I have achieved success.
What does #BEYOUROWN mean to you?
#BEYOUROWN to me is about not waiting for an invitation and giving yourself permission. Permission to be bold, authentic, and unapologetically you. To be Individual, brave and do something never before seen by the world.
Finally, what are you working on throughout 2019?
I’m a firm believer that we should always be learning, so I’m determined to achieve my Reiki Master Level, I’m currently taking Level 3 and I know my Reiki journey won’t stop there.
2019 is also going to see the launch of my new Discover Your Chakras course. This is going to be a high-touch program, focused on the learning and healing of the Chakras to empower ladies who want to heal their stories, remove their limitations and lead themselves into their dream lifestyle.
