#BEYOUROWN MEETS SARAH ADAMS

Sarah Adams was Lead Trainer and then Director of Education at HairM, which lead her to own and reform one of Portland Oregon’s staple salons, 77 Salon from 2008-2015. From there her reputation for excellence and attention to detail was sought after by the likes of American Crew and Hattori Hanzo Shears to teach stylists the techniques Sarah mastered for her celebrity and high-end fashion clients, like BALMAIN.

Sarah can be found at hair shows on stage and in various speaking environments around the world teaching the art of business, runway, and men’s grooming. She boasts positions with American Crew as an International All-Star, Creative Director MUAH Key Stylist for FashioNXT, and key hair stylist at NYFW.

She is a well-rounded stylist with a forté for runway leadership and editorial work including clients such as Walter Collection, Michael Costello, Pendleton, NIKE, Michelle Lesniak, Gunnar Deatherage and Seth Aaron. She is currently available by appointment behind the chair in Portland Oregon, Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago.

Hey Sarah, can you give us some background information on your career prior to where you are today?

I’ve done a little of everything! I spent over decade traveling the world educating and making hair art with top brands. I owned a huge salon in the hip city of Portland OR. Before that, I trained hard to become a hair educator. I didn’t have social platforms to proclaim instant fame.

Being well rounded is key. I have attended seminars, shows, and even taken on mentors that include

Cesar Ramierez, Martin Parsons, Vivienne Mackinder, David Raccuglia, Paul Wilson, Craig Hanson

Theri Dejoode, Charlie Price, Guido Rieger , Robert Cromeans, Brendon Burchard and also Tim Storrey.

What is a typical day in the life of you like?

Much of the time it’s airplanes hotel lobby’s and disco naps. When I am home, I try and wake up well before my family. Breathing and self care come first. I love to ride my bike to work. I’m the first to arrive at the barbershop and often the last to leave.

What originally sparked your interest to become a hair stylist?

It seemed less work than singing Opera. Boy was I in for a surprise!

Being a hairstylist requires tenacious energy and details. Now I even do hair on stage. So similar!

What is your favourite type of project brief or collaboration to work on?

I am an artist. When I get liberty to create, and have a trusting client who wants my art mixed with their art…yeah. That is my favourite.

Favourite season or particular trend?

Favourite season is summer. I love the heat, summer concerts.

Trends pass. Be original.

How do you handle pressure?

I love pressure. Pressure makes diamonds. I also love diamonds.

What about criticism?

They say….If you can’t handle being talked about, lied on, and not liked, then you’re not ready to be successful. To criticism, I say fight it with self love.

What is the best advice you have received recently?

To stop giving so many Fucks!

Best advice you could give someone?

Stay curious and get a mentor.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Art, photography and humour. I love that the internet gives me a sort of glimpse into nearly every artists workshop and dark mind.

How do you define success on your terms?

Success is not just when I am killing it at work and life, It’s also when I have the courage to ask for what I still need.

What are your goals for the next few months and how are you striving to achieve them?

I need to hire 2 new assistants thats for sure! I also have 4-6 countries I’m going to check off my list. I would like to start staying fit, and also do more hair photoshoots just for fun.
