Preparing Your Family For A Move

Moving home should be a time of fun, dreams and excitement, especially if you are upgrading to your dream house, or relocating to pursue an incredible career opportunity. However, that doesn’t mean that moving house doesn’t come without stress, and it’s even more challenging if you’re moving your family with you.

There are even more jobs to balance, particularly when it comes to helping your children adjust to the idea of living somewhere new. If this is a challenge that you’ll be facing soon, here are a few tips to help you get through it.

Create a checklist and a schedule

A good place to start is by creating a checklist of all the jobs you have to do regarding your big move and then forming a schedule around them. Build your schedule around the priority jobs, making sure that they are completed first so that you don’t have to worry about them. If you do work, you might want to consider taking a day or two off to pack up your things closer to your moving date if possible. If you are a stay-at-home parent, it’s a good idea to make use of the time your kids are at school to do as much on your checklist as possible.

Organise your belongings

If you’re moving to a new home, you don’t want to bring clutter with you. Take this as an opportunity to organize your belongings, donate items that you no longer want, or sell them online if you would like to make some extra money to help with the move. It is worth considering whether you would like to store any belongings (large or small) until you get settled in your new home, either for protection or to make room for decorators. For example, larger items of furniture that you won’t need straight awa, or gardening equipment, and so on. You can lease storage units of various sizes and prices from companies such as Storage Area.

Give everyone a job

Allocate jobs to everyone involved in the move to make sure that nothing is missed out and to alleviate some of the pressure on you. For example, your partner can be in charge of packing up the garage or other outside storage, your kids should be responsible for packing up their rooms if they are old enough to do so, and so on. Not only will this make your packing experience easier, but it will also help to teach your kids important organization skills and how to be responsible for their belongings.

Book a moving van in advance

If you’re going to use a removal company to help you transport your belongings to your new home, make sure that you book them in advance. Otherwise, you might risk being unable to get a van for the day of your move. If you are renting a van to drive yourself, the same rule applies, as this will make it much easier to have a smooth transition from your old home to your new one.

Moving house should be a positive experience for everyone in your family, and by using the tips above you might find that it will help to make organizing your move a lot easier and more enjoyable.
