PROJECT #BEYOUROWN WOMAN : PAMELA CHARBIT

In our fifth installment of our 6 part campaign, we present Pamela Charbit to talk about what it means to her to BE YOUR OWN Woman in the 21st century.

My name is Pamela, I am the founder of On The Move which consists of a music website based in France along with a magazine here in the USA. I am also working on the French radio Virgin Radio. All I’ve ever wanted to do since I was a kid was to work in music and move to the USA. I decided to follow my dreams and to try my luck in Los Angeles where I’ve been living since September.

The music business is a male-dominated industry where you can sometimes feel intimidated by a woman. I personally struggled to make a name for myself when I first opened my website back in 2012, especially when I told people that I wanted to get into A&R. I received so many sarcastic « good luck » or « you are brave » without really understanding what it meant. When I asked someone, the only answer that I got was « A&R is not a job for a woman ». I received so many unsolicited comments about the path that I had chosen, even from friends sometimes, that I started to ask myself if I had made the right choice. I feel like even in 2017 so many people in the professional area don’t understand that success isn’t a matter of sex,  but more a matter of mindset.

To me BE YOUR OWN Woman, means to be your own person, to be able to take your own decisions and do not live in the shadow of someone else. There are so many talented ladies out there in every industry who don’t recognise and realise their potential because of peer pressure, or because they feel they won’t be as good as a man. To quote the great James Brown I’d say that this is a man’s world but it wouldn’t be nothing without a woman or a girl.
