#BEYOUROWN MEETS BETTY LAM

Betty Lam is the owner and founder of Betty Glam Boutique – a YYZ (Toronto) based ladies fashion e-boutique. She is skilled in charity events, volunteer abroad work, client relations, global e-commerce, and fashion styling. Growing up Betty was always inspired by the lives and stories of many female trailblazers (from joining a sorority to taking women and gender study classes to study fashion management in post-grad, to working on women empowerment projects and working with a female executive team).

Betty’s discerning eye and love for fashion began at a young age. In sixth grade, Betty won a “J-14” magazine with Hilary Duff on the cover as a prize from a spelling bee contest and since then she became even more committed to her love of fashion. Since her pre-teen years, she loved reading fashion magazines and even had print magazine subscriptions delivered to her doorstep. She graduated from Teen Vogue to Seventeen and later on to Nylon, Vogue and Elle Canada magazines. Betty understood that fashion was not only about clothes – but it was a world on its own – a vast universe filled with hopes and dreams. She is often praised for her upbeat attitude, keen eye to detail, fresh approach to ladies fashion styling and trendsetting abilities. She continues to use her voice and platform to build a community of body-positive women and do-gooders who celebrate self-love.

Hey Betty, can you introduce yourself to us?

Absolutely! I am a free-spirited, positive-energy, people-liker and a fashion-styling, online-shopping / (glamorous) gowns/events enthusiast. I live in Thornhill (30 minutes from Toronto), Ontario Canada. I am extremely outgoing and quite the social butterfly. I very much enjoy social gatherings and am always intrigued to hear about other people’s background and stories about how they got to where they are today. I strongly believe in the quote “strangers are friends you haven’t met.” Also, I normally great at making new friends/connections – as well as getting people to open up to me. I am the type of person where if we accidentally make eye contact on the street/subway / anywhere – I can’t help but automatically smile back.

Can you take us through your journey to where you are now?

I’ll try to give you a rough timeline of the journey that led me to where I am now.

Back in December 2016, after graduating from post-grad where I studied Fashion Management – I had not started applying for any full-time careers yet. I was Googling fun and unique careers in Toronto and somehow came across this article about Canadian female entrepreneurs. This one bio stood out to me – it was about this serial female entrepreneur in Toronto that started her first event staffing and modeling agency at age 23 with only $80 in her pocket. I thought how impressive! Little did I know that same entrepreneur would become my boss a month later. I thought she looked familiar – until I realized that I have seen her photos from her event staffing company’s Instagram page before.

I then applied to join their Brand Ambassador roster. Not long after being accepted onto their BA/models roster-  I saw a post on their Models Facebook page saying that the exec team an office assistant for two days or so. Again – I always love meeting people and thought about how it would be fun to meet the ladies on the executive team! I commented on the post with my email to say that I was available. I did not have high hopes of getting a response, because there were plenty of other girls who commented as well.

To my surprise, their account coordinator sent an email asking for my resume and wanted to see if I was available Full-Time. I hopped on a call with her the same day, went in for a working interview and the rest is history!

In January 2017, I was the EA to CEO  of a leading event staffing and modeling agency. She was a successful female entrepreneur with 3 other sister companies – 2 of them being E-Commerce. Prior to that, I have never had much experience in e-commerce. I have always been the type of person where if I have never tried something or did not have the answer – I would go to Google and Youtube tutorials for help.

I was with the company for a little over 1.5 years and will forever be grateful that I got to work with the most amazing, hardworking and talented group of ladies at the head office.

Let’s fast forward to June 2018 – a little before my Betty Glam Boutique journey had begun. People normally quit their jobs when they have interviews lined up – or they have at least started looking for another job. You may call this superstitious but earlier in the month I kept seeing the number 444 everywhere – from the time on my cell, to the exact cost of my discounted Uber ride etc.

I jokingly said to my friends and even posted it on my Instagram story that I must be cursed because the number ‘4’ also means ‘death’ in Cantonese. Then my friend commented that he sees it too and told me to Google the meaning. There are 5 meanings to 444 – and one of them is that a messenger is telling you to have faith and confidence that you are going in the right direction in life. I told myself that even if that is not true, it was a great reminder to take a leap of faith!

I am grateful that my partner, friends, and previous colleagues/boss were so supportive of my decision to pursue my passion of doing something fashion related. When I first quit my FT job – I had not applied for another job or even started looking for something else. I knew I wanted to do something fashion related but I did not know what. I took about a week or two to relax, read novels, sleep in and have some me time. During the two weeks, my dietician (biological) sister had been more worried about my career than I was. She sent me job postings that had pretty generous pay – but they were all government/health related FT jobs. I knew she meant well and is great at what she does, but I had to remind her that was her field/ passion – not mine. I did not want to work somewhere for the sake of making a lot of money.

Sure- making money is great, but I wanted to chase a purpose and do something that makes me excited to get up in the morning and put in work! I knew I didn’t want to apply for a job unless it was something I could see myself doing long-term and/or something I was truly passionate about.

I then asked myself two questions:

  1. What is something you love to do and are not so bad at?
  2. What do people compliment you on and ask you for help with most?

Answers:

  1. Sourcing (fabulous) outfits, fashion-styling (for women) and online shopping (I have lost track of the number of times I online shopped for accessories/clothing from undergrad until the present day. I was part of many clubs and societies in undergrad – including Sorority / Greek Life which allowed me to constantly get creative at putting together fun outfits multiple times a week for various events).
  1. My outfits and where I online shop / get my clothes?

Fashion-Styling is what I know, live and breathe. I love putting together the most glam outfits for soirees/ charity galas / themed events / just about any occasion. I am pretty sure I *gasped* out loud when the lightbulb went off in my head. I was going to start my very own Ladies Fashion E-Boutique!

Of course, there were so many Youtube videos about registering for a business in the US but not as many about Canada. I was determined to find answers so I sent out emails / made phone calls / read some articles (super helpful).

During the two months, I :

  • Registered for a Business License / domain name / tax #s / import & export accounts etc.
  • Looked for vendors from NY / LA.
  • Placed orders for product/clothes for my e-boutique.
  • Created & ordered super cute packing materials/business cards.
  • Started working on a website.
  •  Organised a fun photoshoot with my girlfriends.
  • Opened a business bank account.
  • Bought e-commerce / Marketing books.

September came and a month before my launch, I created my social media pages, started building my subscription list and began the pre-launch process. I also did a Giveaway for $250 E-Gift Card to use at BGB – as well as a giveaway for a gown. Then I finally launched my BGB website on October 19th, 2018!

What is a day in the life of you like?

I would love to tell you that I am an early riser and that I always start my day by reading up on the news and listening to motivational podcasts… but I would rather not lie. Realistically, I am on my cell in the morning and I start my day watching adorable pet/animal videos. Bet you were not expecting that… I also enjoy watching short positive, motivational and heartwarming clips on my Instagram / Facebook newsfeed. Recently, I came across this video of a little girl receiving a paperclip as a “gift” – I have never seen anyone so happy and grateful. It was so precious! There was another short video clip of this Pre-K class starting the day off being greeted one by one by the “Greeter of the Week” with their choice of – a hug, handshake, high-five or fistbump. It’s always great to start your day off smiling and for personally I find those type of adorable and heartwarming videos to be a great mood booster.

I am also following this Facebook Group called ‘Women Helping Women Entrepreneurs’ – I often see many motivational quotes on the page and encouraging words/comments in the group. It is such a great online community where you can find business tips, resources, and tools from female entrepreneurs.

After that, I would check and respond to Betty Glam Boutique emails and online messages. I am constantly looking for fun and unique new collections and pieces from various Los Angeles and New York vendors online – recently the UK too. I have found a great number of vendors just from browsing on Instagram. Throughout my day I would respond to messages and comments on BGB’s social media pages. I would also edit and create banners and posts to upload and update my social media content with.

I find myself constantly on my phone / online responding or interacting with people sometimes till late at night and even on weekends. I also spend some days talking to wholesale vendors and browsing / reviewing lookbooks of new and upcoming season’s collections. When I am online-shopping for my e-boutique it also feels like I am shopping for myself. I only stock things that I love and would personally wear myself or something that I can see my fashionista girlfriends/clientele wearing too.

In the afternoon I would have orders packed and schedule pick up for the packages to be sent out. I make sure to handwrite Thank You cards with positive/motivational quotes  – they may or may not be written with a Pink pen or Sharpie too.

I love adding a personal touch in everything I do. I have always been unapologetically girl, so when I was brainstorming ideas for BGB I knew I wanted everything to have a little piece of me in it.  

Even the tissue paper, stickers and thank you cards are ultra feminine and/or pink. Throughout the day I am also snacking or ordering uber-eats! My friends know me to be someone who is always in a “snacky” mood. I swear it helps me think and work better when I am snacking or munching on something.  

I am insanely passionate about building BGB – and I am always enjoying what I do so really none of this feels like work to me!

What was the concept behind launching Betty Glam Boutique and what was the process like?

Back in July was brainstorming and wrote down approximately 40 names for the e-boutique- but ended up using the very FIRST one I wrote down – “ Betty Glam.” I love how putting a “G” in front of my last name automatically turns it into “Glam.”  I gave myself a mental pat on the back – it’s simple, easy to remember and everything that I am about. I am obsessed with gowns and glamorous outfits. I lost count of the number of gowns I own. The quote “I like my money where I can see it – hanging in my closet” was meant for me. I even jokingly said to my partner that in the future I don’t need a diamond ring – he can prove his love and devotion to me by building a walk-in-closet for me. Betty Glam Boutique is essentially me and a capsule of my online closet – more styles added weekly.

Back in Summer, I outsourced for my logo design and BGB’s tagline. They were brilliant graphic designers and copywriters, I bought their work but did not end up using it.  The logo they designed was very artistic and professional looking and the taglines they came up with were witty and fashion related – but it did not feel like me or Betty Glam. I trusted my gut and ended up coming up with my own tagline (I thought I was hilarious) for BGB, found/ purchased an elegant and feminine font and asked the font designer if she could fill in the letters with rose gold. When I saw finished  ‘Betty Glam’ product – I immediately knew that was it.

Can you tell us more about your brand DNA and ethos at Betty Glam Boutique?

At BGB, we are obsessed with all things classy, feminine, glitz & glam and effortlessly chic. A Betty Glam Darling is a modern, chic and fashion-forward lady. She is a positive, free-spirited, people-loving, confident girl who stands out in a crowd.  All of our products were handpicked with love and with our customers and we’ve got you covered with a wide selection of flattering bodysuits, to stylish boss-babe / workplace wear, to embellished pieces, to maxi gowns, to curve-hugging jumpsuits, to flattering going-out-out dresses and classy soiree gowns.

Our high-quality and show-stopping styles are inspired by empowered body-positive women and those who love to flaunt what their mama gave’em! Let’s just say – BGB is a place where the two B-words“boring” and “basic” are nonexistent in our fashion vocab or wardrobe.

How is Betty Glam Boutique funded, is it bootstrapped, self-funded ect?

I am proud to say that BGB is self-funded. Starting your own E-commerce business does not cost as much as some might think. You can get your business license, Tax IDs, purchase domain names, create your website, purchase quality clothing at wholesale pieces and get your e-commerce business up and running for less than CAD $400-500.

Congratulations on your recent collaboration with a British based Haute Couture brand, please share with us the fabulous news!

Thank you so much!!! Approximately a week ago I was checking dm’s from my personal IG account and noticed a message from ‘A Star is Born’ – and no not the Lady Gaga movie (Although that would have been pretty awesome too) – the UK Haute Couture brand. Their PR rep contacted me asking if I would consider stocking their SS19 collection. I would be the first and only in Canada to carry their brand.  

I have had other cosmetics/jewelry/fashion brands and companies reach out – but this is one I was most excited about.  

ASIB’s evening wear and party collection are what dreams are made of. They have total showstopping, drop-dead gorgeous – red carpet and special occasion collections for tall, curvy and petite sizes too. Their pieces have the most with lustrous and delicate hand embellishments, beautiful embroidery, playful fringes, and flattering prints.

I am so happy that they’re allowing me to not only stock their new SS19 collection (not available anywhere yet) – but also purchase any of their design that are suitable for me and my clientele!

Brand exclusivity is so very important to me. At this moment, ASIB is sold exclusively online at ASOS and Namshi. Previously when I online shopped at ASOS (one of my favourite places to online shop might I add) for ASIB – I thought once the pieces are gone they are gone forever. Understandably, larger retailers have hundreds to thousands of different brands so they would move from season to season rather than restocking previous bestseller items/collections.

As much as I like new collections, I am also looking forward to bringing back pieces that are timeless and pieces that speak to me! The designs I choose to have them restock and remake will be sold exclusively at BETTYGLAMBOUTIQUE.COM. ASIB only start production based on purchase orders – they don’t sell directly to consumers on their website. Meaning currently if I choose to stock 5 pieces of their previous designs – there would only be 5 pieces left in the world (unless I restock of course). I want girls and women to feel special and the utmost glam while wearing unique one-of-a-kind ASIB couture pieces for their wedding, prom, lavish/classy parties or any special occasion.

When ASIB said they were thrilled and honored for me to consider carrying their clothing – I thought more like the other way around?!

Since July I was thinking that someday I want not only to sell gowns but also add gown rental to BGB when I find pieces that make my heart sing. That dream might come sooner than I expected. The thing is – I have been a huge fan of theirs ever since I made my purchase from them in 2016 on Asos. I have always been obsessed with gowns – the same way people are obsessed with newly limited-edition sneakers or brand new luxury sports cars.

I can always recall special and important moments in life-based on my carefully selected outfit for the occasion. I wore their pieces on 2 special occasions / important nights of my life: my Fabulous 25th Birthday and a Classy NYE Charity Soiree I hosted last year.

I only recently launched my business and BGB’s Instagram is still growing / still a ‘baby,’ so I was curious as to how they found me. The lovely PR lady responded via email  “I found you on IG – saw one of your posts on Betty Glam Boutique and thought WOW you would be a great fit for our designs.”

Isn’t it crazy how when you work hard for what you love and believe in and are relentlessly you, everything just falls into place!

Can you give us 3 useful tips to help us save our health as an entrepreneur?

  1. Do more of what makes you happy, always have fun in what you do and laugh every day.
  2. Be more picky about the company you keep. Surround yourself with do-gooders, optimistic/positive vibes type of people!
  3. Get more sleep  (I am a night owl – this one is a note to myself too)

Who does the team involve behind you Betty Glam Boutique?

I launched my e-commerce business a little over 2 weeks ago so I do most of the work from customer service to packing/ shipping/inventory / social media myself. Occasionally I outsource and I have also had the help of virtual assistants mainly for responding to messages.

Where can you see yourself within the next 3-5 years?

My dream is to open up a gown rental in a glamorous loft in Toronto and eventually I would love to do freelance styling for films/tv shows/ commercials/editorials/ music videos too. One step at a time of course. This started out merely as a passion project – but I do have hopes for BGB to grow. I can see myself traveling to LA / Vegas / NY / around the world regularly to meet vendors / do collabs, go to more fashion conventions and trade shows in the future. No one can be certain of what the future holds, but one thing I know is that I will always continue doing something fashion related.

What strategies do you have in place when looking at the expansion of Betty Glam Boutique?

I will be starting a Brand Ambassador program sometime in the next month or two – and call it “Betty Glambassador.” Welcome to the #Glamily sounds cheesy I know – but it has a ring to it. I plan on starting this locally – with discounts, nice commission, free products, events to celebrate the ladies that join. I will also be working more fun projects in the near future – may have something to do with glamorous closets and mansions…stay tuned! I plan on reaching out to female entrepreneurs, go-getters, positive energy, the smiley, and do-gooders type of influencers to really grow BGB’s online presence. It’s great if you take stunning fashion/lifestyle photos – but I am also looking for people who are great role models and positively influencing their audience/followers.

Can you tell us what areas you have struggled in professionally?

I can be quite stubborn when it comes to attempting to do everything myself. I have always liked to see how much I can handle on my own – especially when it comes to BGB. Although I love to learn and challenge myself, I have also realised there are many backend tasks that can be quite a time consuming when I am trying to do everything at once. For instance, creating an email and social media campaigns, editing and uploading images to website / social media, SEO for product description and images on the website etc. Google and Youtube tutorials have been great in the pre-launch process – and I am good with the fashion part, but I know in order to grow my business at a more rapid pace I can probably use a coach for more guidance. I recently found a 1:1 coach for engine growth and traffic optimisation – we are having a pre-screening call this week. He said I am one of the three businesses he is accepting for  1:11 coaching – normally he receives 30-40 applicants monthly. I crave knowledge and I always love to learn! *Fingers Crossed*

I often have so many different ideas and things I want to do – but I have learned that if you want to be good at something focus on getting great at that one or two tasks before jumping from project to project.

Have you ever had any other mentor? If so how has this benefitted you to grow?

I am so grateful to have come across many mentally strong, talented and hardworking people who have inspired me in more ways than I can count. It just so happens that majority of my previous managers, bosses and fashion professors were women.

Summer 2015 Fashion Internship: In my first year of Fashion Management  I completed an internship with luxury men’s fashion brand in the Yorkville neighborhood of Toronto, Ontario. I wanted someplace where I can challenge myself and the menswear/luxury suits department was definitely outside of my realm of expertise. Side Note: I found this brand on IG and wrote an email to their NY HQ. I knew they didn’t have an internship program in Canada – but it didn’t stop me from asking. Looking back, the email I sent to them was probably not the most formal/professional, but I was happy I sent it. It was from a young girl who was full of hope and excitement and extremely eager to learn. I am so grateful that they took a chance on me.

You never know until you try (or ask)! My intern supervisor with initials L.R. who later on became the regional manager as an ambitious and remarkable lady and a total boss. I looked up to her and valued her transparency when it came to giving constructive feedback. I prefer when people are completely honest with me and let me know areas where I can improve – rather than constantly giving me praises and telling me that I am doing a fantastic job. It was because of this one supervisor that have learned to be more proactive both in life and business, take initiative and follow up to get things done.

Working as an EA to CEO at my previous job, I not only learned from my boss but also from the ladies on the executive team. I am someone with a curious and observant personality so I was glad I got to pick up bits and pieces of knowledge from each of them while I while I was there. Our boss did not micromanage but instead, she trusted us to do our job and even allowed some work from home days. I strongly believe that by not micromanaging it allows your employees to become more innovative and creative on the job. Time and time again, I learned that (almost) everything is figureoutable with patience and research and the support of a great group of trailblazing ladies!

What outlets do use to market your Betty Glam Boutique?

Facebook / Instagram Page. Many of my girlfriends have a great following base online too! Come to think of it – I never even had to ask, but they would help give BGB shoutouts on their IG stories/page, repost statuses and post photos wearing pieces from my e-boutique too. I am truly blessed to have the best and most supportive partner and ladies in my life.

I have also had some fashion/lifestyle influencers email and send direct messages on Instagram asking for a collaboration. I was pleasantly surprised when several influencers from Spain and Portugal (models, marketing specialist, radio host, fashion bloggers) reached out inquiring about collaborations – talk about the power of social media.

Which methods are you using to build your own support network?

Growing up and especially since undergrad, I have always been surrounded by the most lovely and supportive ladies. To this day, some of my closest friends are my sorority sisters – they were a family away from home. We grew up together and always had each other’s backs.  I truly believe in the quote ‘your vibe attracts your tribe.’ I am so grateful to have a large group and wonderful group of charismatic, positive energy, and driven sorority sisters/colleagues and girlfriends friends in my life. No matter how swamped my girlfriends with work or our own projects – we always make time to catch up / check up on each other over Facetime, online Group chats, texts and my favourite – girls night over dinner and cocktails.

What do you believe are the common misconceptions about the retail and how are you using your platform and voice to educate people more?

One common misconception about retail is that with the rise of e-commerce, brick-and-mortar/retailers will continue to close up. While many major retailers have closed down – there are also many brands and other retailers that are continuing to rise. Millennials are not the only ones that enjoy digital retailers- they are also changing shopping behaviours of their parents. The way consumers shop has been evolving – but retailers who are shaping up and thriving are the ones who are capitalizing and taking note of the changes in their consumer’s shopping behaviours. Despite the convenience of online shopping – in-store retailers are not going anywhere anytime soon. In-store shopping is an experience and a social aspect in itself.

What would you like to see changed for millennials in the retail business?

While keeping up with trends and understanding your market is great for business, I would also like to see more stay true to their core mission and brand. Stay excited about your business / your passions in life and don’t follow other people’s path or you can easily lose yourself.

What is the best piece of business advice you have received to date?

In my first year of Fashion, one of my favourite fashion professors once said in a lecture – the fashion industry is a small world – pick your battles and dont burn bridges so easily. She told us the people we are sitting in class with could one day be our boss.  That message stuck with me all these years. I have never been a catty person and I try to avoid drama like a plague. I am happy and proud to say that I have been able to exit gracefully and professionally – in all my previous jobs. I try to be mindful of my behaviour and the way I talk to and treat others. I still keep in touch with previous bosses and colleagues – it’s always great catching up and seeing all their accomplishments since the time we worked together.

When I left my previous job – my boss wrapped cute, pink themed and girly gifts in pink tissue paper/ bag for me and gave me a handwritten card. On the front, it says “Be Brave” – the inside of says “BE YOU.”

It says:

I am so proud of you for going on to follow your dreams! Your kind spirit + bright smile are irreplaceable!  You are irreplaceable! You light up every room you enter. Don’t ever lose your positivity + optimistic outlook on life. You’ll move mountains, Betty Boop!

I keep all cards and letters – and that was by far one of the most endearing and motivation card  I have ever received!  It was a great reminder to never give up and to chase my dreams. Yet another Pinterest quote comes to mind “Don’t stop until you’re proud.”

What is the number 1 critical lesson you have learned in your career so far?

Another misconception is that when you have an e-commerce store – pretty much all you do is buy and sell clothes online. That is only a small part of what we do! My goal is to have more open discussions, create vlogs/blogs and use social media to show connect with viewers and show what goes on behind the scenes.

I have learned that being able to say “no” is not a bad thing. I always want to be unapologetically me. “Do you like the person you are becoming?” is a question that I have stopped to ask myself more than once in my life.  It’s important to check yourself once in a while. If you stay true to yourself – you will only attract the right things/energy/people into your business and life. There is no greater feeling than being able to stock and sell products that feel like me or is a brand/product that I can truly stand behind. Note to future self: Never ever be a sellout.

Another great lesson I have learned is to be patient with myself – to allow myself to be a beginner and not have all the answers. You can’t start off as an expert in everything. When you start searching for answers – only then can you grow and learn and push yourself to work harder for something you believe in.

How do you create an evenly balanced work and personal life?

There are times when I have tunnel vision and hours would pass before I realise I haven’t left my computer/desk from morning until dinner time. I have learned to take breaks. When I am working I am mostly on the computer. I always make sure to set aside time to unwind, unplug, relax and catch up with friends/family / go see my boyfriend.  I love finding things to do / events to attend and new restaurants to try in and around Toronto.

I crave adventures and I am always trying to make time to hop on a plane/travel and explore.

The highlight of your career so far?

I am a new entrepreneur, I launched my Betty Glam Boutique website in mid-October. It definitely feels longer than just two weeks ago – because so much has happened since. This is only the beginning of my career, but the point when I felt like things were really starting to shape up was when I organised my prelaunch photoshoot, launched my website and even updated my LinkedIn job description. Truth be told, I don’t use LinkedIn as often as I should but the week I added: “Betty Glam Boutique” to my LinkedIn and my profile views went up by over 8300% (yes – that is 83 with two zeros). I had to screenshot that. My previous boss/ CEO updated a status about me and Betty Glam Boutique so that probably had a lot to do with the huge increase in traffic and views.

What gives you ultimate career satisfaction?

Ultimate career satisfaction is when people are wearing pieces that I have carefully handpicked myself.

Which other leading entrepreneurs and pioneering game changers do you also admire and why?

I have always admired the three unstoppable ultra-stylish ladies –  Blake Lively, Lady Gaga and Jaime King.

Lady Gaga is such a remarkable woman. She is such a bold and unapologetic activist / modern feminist. I love how she sets a great example for girls/people not to conform to societal expectations, especially when it comes to physical appearance. She has the best quotes and delivers the best responses to body-shaming haters!

Blake Lively is my Idol – she always seems so happy and has a great smile/laugh/ fashion sense! She is the human form of sunshine. She is definitely making the power suits even more trendy since her “A Simple Favor.”

Jaime King as I find her to be such an inspiration and a breath of fresh air in the fashion industry. She is a mother of two, a former model, actress, serial entrepreneur, a filmmaker and even has a gender fluid children’s clothing line – this lady can do it all!

What is a good article or book you have read recently?

‘Psycho-Cybernetics.’ The book is about using your mind for self-development / improvement/training your mind/power of self-affirmation. Great read! I also enjoy reading Vogue.com and Elle Canada.

3 go-to Podcast channels?

I don’t listen to podcasts all that often, but when I do – my go-to podcasts are ones with inspirational stories and positive messages that are great for personal growth. I personally love ones with interviews on ambitious female entrepreneurs – their career trajectories, following their hearts and dreams, and the story behind how they created a wildly successful brand/business.

  2. Krista Williams and Lindsay Simick’s ‘Almost 30.’
  3. Micah and Michiah’s ‘Dreamers that Do.’

 

How do you measure your own terms of success?

We all want and crave success. I too want to build a life and business that I am proud of. Be competitive with yourself rather than comparing yourself to other people and their success. While it is good to understand your market, you should also be proud of the journey you’re on. Everyone has their own goals, ambitions, and dreams – we are not the same and we are all on a different path in life.

Your ability to positively impact/influence those around you is also a great way to measure success.

What does #BEYOUROWN mean to you?

#BEYOUROWN means being confident in who you are and what you do. It means being your true self – raw, authentic and relentlessly you.

Lastly, what is next for you?

Aside from adding haute couture to Betty Glam Boutique – I also plan on doing more collaborations with more like-minded fashionistas and fashion enthusiasts! I will also be going to California soon to shop – I want to see and feel the pieces I pick IN PERSON. You may be seeing ultra glam headpieces and accessories too. The kind of fairytales like pieces that turn heads as you walk past them and they stunned by your grace and beauty!

Yves Saint Laurent was right when he said that “over the years I have learned that what is important in the dress is the woman who is wearing it.” It is always important for me to work hard, but always have fun and enjoy the process/journey along the way.
