If you’re a mother with your own business, you will probably find that you will need to juggle your work and home life now even more than before due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Being an entrepreneur while having to homeschool your children is difficult, but not impossible.

These 3 tips by SME owner Rachel Morgan-Trimmer will help you to keep your business afloat in these challenging times, and also make the most of the time you now have with your kids. They will also help you to look after yourself, which is vital to ensure you don’t burn out.

Get up early

If you can get an hour of work in before the children get up, you will be giving yourself a head-start on your day. You might find you get twice as much done during that morning hour (many people are more productive in the morning) and because you have limited time, are more efficient with how you spend it.

Don’t sweat the homeschooling

You’re not a qualified teacher (and even if you are, teaching your own kids is completely different!). As long as they’re learning or doing something, they’ll be fine. There are tons of free educational resources online, from worksheets to YouTube videos to live online demos. You don’t have to come up with all the ideas all the time. Non-academic learning – involving the children in the activities you enjoy – is educational and can be fun for you both. Do some gardening together. Bake a cake. Teach them to knit. Write, draw, dance and sing. It’s all learning.

Move around and get outside if you can

Take a field trip if you’re not isolating and can keep social distancing – take hand sanitiser and make sure you wash your hands where you can. If you are holed up in a flat or house, do whatever activities you can, as it will help massively with your energy. Dance videos, family yoga, or your normal classes that have been moved online – any kind of moving about will make you feel better and help keep you fit. Another benefit of movement is that it will help you sleep better. Many people are now suffering from insomnia thanks to anxiety and uncertainty, and taking exercise each day and getting fresh air when you can help.
