What’s the cause?

The first step is to try and identify the cause of your career crisis. What about your current career doesn’t appeal to you any more? Is it from fear? Is it to do with money? Maybe you’ve just decided the industry doesn’t interest you – and that’s perfectly fine. Identifying this will help you realise why you might want to change career paths, which starts you off nicely for the next steps.

Remember what makes you happy

After you’ve identified the cause, you need to remember what makes you happy. A situation like this is going to be quite stressful, and when in a stressful mindset, it’s going to be hard for you to think rationally or make proper decisions. So list down some of the things that make you happy – no matter how big or small. This will help you stay grounded and may give you an indication of some other industries you could go into.

Recognise what you don’t enjoy

The next step is to recognise what you don’t enjoy. So, basically the opposite to tip 2! Again, make a list. What things don’t make you happy? What things do you find boring or disinteresting? This list will help you avoid jobs, careers, and industries that you know for sure aren’t for you.

Identify your goals

Once you’ve made these lists, you need to identify your goals. Even if you’ve done this previously, your goals and aspirations may change. Set one or two main goals – the big dreams. If you can’t think that far, start with smaller goals that can be achieved within the next year. Assign a time frame to each of your goals – this will help you keep yourself accountable and boost your motivation. If you identify where you want to be, based around what makes you happy, you’ll be able to move onto the next step.

Now you’ve identified your goals, it’s time to put them into action. Start by setting small actionable steps that are going to act as stepping stones to get you to your goals. Make sure these steps are realistic, and achievable within your time frame. One step at a time – don’t try and do too much at once. Achieving smaller goals throughout your step-by-step journey will help keep your eyes on the prize, and keep you motivated.

Remember, whatever it is that set off this career crisis, it’s okay to be feeling this way. It’s natural to change your opinion now and then. The thing to do is to always be open-minded and be able to adapt. Adaptability is something that we all need to be aware of. Adapt to new changes, and new situations. Change is completely natural, and yes it can be scary, terrifying even. But it’s the way that we adapt and learn from change that makes us grow and develop.
