The beauty industry is such a large space right now to get into. Women are loving being creative but also being able to build businesses around their children if they are working on their own. Many people also don’t realise how lucrative the industry is and the scope of what you can offer from beauty treatments, hair, aesthetics, lashes, and products.Â
As a strategy coach within the beauty industry, Katie Godfrey, CEO Of KG Professional and KG Salon shares top 5 tips for starting your beauty business.
First, you need to find what area you want to work in. What do you have a passion for? As after all that will keep you going if you’re going to build a business. Do you think you would like to specialise in face treatments and offer lashes & brows. Or maybe your more of a nail girl and want to work in that area. The aesthetic industry is also huge and growing right now for those that have the relevant qualifications. Nowadays, there’s also lots of options for education, you can learn a lot with short courses, not having to go to beauty college. You just need to make sure it’s an approved accredited course.Â
Once you have nailed what treatments you want to offer or products you wish to sell, you need to know your audience. Many would say “Well all women” but its not. Who would you really want to work with day in and day out. Remember this is your business, you get to choose who you want to attract into it. What would your ideal clients price point be and what would their job be? This would help you decide your prices and what services to offer. What hours to do they work? This will help you to decide your opening hours. So never miss out the task of knowing who your ideal client is.Â
Next you need to market your new business. Social media is always a good place to start with lots of people on the internet and spending more time on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. TikTok is also good for video reach and to show your creative flair. Being consistent with what your posting is key. It takes 7-14 times for someone to see something before they buy into it. So even if you’re posting and get nothing back, just keep going.Â
To help you get the best reach on social media it is highly recommended to use targeted advertising. Historically, digital advertising can be a bit of a minefield and expensive to outsource. If not correctly done your ad just won’t be seen, but there’s a new service I am using, Balloonary which is really easy to use and lets you design, launch, target and manage your own ads really simply and for a low cost.Â
Be part of a community. Once you have trained and you start in business its highly recommended to carry on your training, so you are always perfecting your skills and keeping up to date with innovation in the sector. For added support you may also want to look into getting a business coach or join a like-minded community. Running any business can be extremely lonely.
You need likeminded people to be around and bounce your ideas from and grow. Remember you are a mix of the 5 people you mostly hang around with, so choose your circle wisely. Being surrounded with those that can guide you in business will speed up your chances of success.Â
Now go and smash your beauty business and feel free to reach out for any support.Â
