Many people are putting on a façade that work is truly enjoyable and that they are having the time of their lives. But they are not. If you like what you do, that’s okay, but this is for someone and everyone who goes through the daily grind, chomping away, and years later they are in the worst state than they’ve ever been. Stuck, unhappy, and miserable…dreams are forgotten.
Esther Murray is a coach who specialises in helping professional women who have hit a dead end in their career due to getting passed over, feeling unappreciated, or lacking opportunities to move ahead in the workplace due to systemic gender discrimination and internal office politics. If you fit the profile, here are 5 strategies to get you pumping and turning the needle in your life by Esther herself.
Invest in yourself
and you’d like to change what’s going on around you, you need to be equipped. That means, doing whatever it takes to be more marketable. Perhaps you want to be a teacher, after serving as a call center operator for many years. You need to get educated and then go out there and teach. There are many teaching positions at private schools which do not necessarily require master’s degrees. Some teaching is as simple as teaching your native language to immigrants from foreign countries.
Network
are many ways to reach like-minded people. The world is your oyster, so take advantage of any opportunity that comes your way. That is, join your local community board; form alliances with individuals who are going through or who have overcome. They are your mentors and teachers. People love to connect when you show interest in them. Never be afraid to ask questions.
Switch office
To feel more valuable you’ll need to step up and ask for more responsibilities. If there are no more opportunities where you are, then seek out other departments that might be interested in your varied skills. Position yourself to be the troubleshooter or the go-to person that everyone will call upon for assistance. Frequently you’ll shine when you exit your old duties, and take on new responsibilities, where you’ll thrive, grow, and learn.
Speak daily affirmations
It’s always a good gesture to write positive notes to yourself. This boosts your morale and helps you through the day to stay grounded and positive. It is not often easy to stay positive, but, if you can think of one thing that you’re grateful for and focus on that when you feel nervous or down in the dumps, reflecting on this simple thought will change your perspective on how to handle negative experiences at work.
Plan an exit strategy
Maybe time to leave. Today, there are many people who have silently checked out and you will not be the last. if you leave the place that no longer serves you. Everyone will approach this differently. My encouragement to you is while you are at that job, build as many skills as you can before you exit. For example, learn how to use all the software on your computer, if possible. It is important to approach your new endeavor with many transferable skills beneath your belt.
Also, have a backup plan. Maybe, you’ve discovered your true purpose and will now, without any hindrance, be able to live your dream. Take time in planning this out well so that you don’t feel that you’ve failed, because you didn’t spend the time to plan well. An exit strategy might also mean thinking about which of your hobbies has the potential to become an everyday vocation. Be aware that interning for short periods of time, without pay, with a desirable employer is often a stepping stone to salaried employment once the employer sees your joy and pleasure in doing the work.
