All while bringing women a deep understanding of their body they never had before.
Welcome Alicia, thank you for taking the time to share your story with us, can you introduce yourself to us?
Thank you for this opportunity to share more with you all and the world! I’m a women’s health mentor specialising in pelvic floor / uterine / cervix healing. I’ve been called to this work from my own journey after having a long history of challenges with this area of my body, I formulated my own system and offerings for women. With my background in somatic (body-based) counselling and many forms of study in the holistic health / self-development fields, I enjoy bringing a fusion of tangible /practical/accessible body-based healing tools grounded in anatomy & physiology combined with emotional permission, trauma-informed care, and sacred sexuality.
Can you give us a little back story on how you are where you are today as the founder of Your Inner Power?
I’ve been in the body based healing world for over 10 years with a background in health & nutrition coaching, yoga teaching & multiple forms of meditation practice, somatic counselling/body psychotherapy/dance movement therapy and more. My path to more fully discover, explore, embody, and feel grounded in myself has been parallel to my journey toward health and well-being in my reproductive system and sexual identity. So much of my journey was about discovering how to support myself, access health and well-being after a long history of challenges with my body.
I began engaging in pelvic floor therapy in hopes of gaining relief with my menstrual cycle after a long history of severe challenges and symptoms. I wasn’t prepared for the level of depth and transformation that would occur through doing this work. I spent years working with a practitioner for myself, studying and devouring everything I could about the divine feminine / sacred sexuality / conscious menstruation/body-based healing/neuroscience and eventually felt inspired to craft my own system to offer to women.
Within a few sessions of receiving therapeutic pelvic floor work for myself, I knew I wanted to go down this path as a professional. I returned to the world of training to study massage therapy, pelvic floor therapy, uterine & abdominal massage, cervix healing, and more. After working as a therapist for years, I started to feel that women needed something more thorough and effective than talk therapy. I’ve brought together my long history of training, self-study, practices, education and the teachings I’ve been so blessed with experiencing from incredible mentors and teachers that showed up in my life at just the right time.
I now offer intensive & in-depth experiences for clients, online courses, group workshops, mentorship for those who want to enter this work, and more. It has been a wild path to walk because this work is still taboo in the eyes of many. For some people in certain parts of the world, exploring this area of the body or education about the female reproductive and sexual system is dangerous. Bringing this body of work to everyone who desires it is my mission and I feel truly aligned with this being my purpose in life. Due to the manipulation and control of women and female bodies that has always and continues to exist in this world, this is at times a serious undertaking.
By using your own personal journey having overcome extreme pelvic health challenges, recovered from sexual and medical trauma, whilst healing a number of other emotional & spiritual challenges as a catalyst, what methods are you using with other women to help their relationship with their body?
The main methods and techniques I draw on include anatomy & physiology in the form of psycho-education, pelvic floor & cervix therapies, uterine & abdominal massage, earth-based psychology, trauma-informed care & trauma processing modalities, neuroscience, prenatal & perinatal psychology, cosmology & physics as a psycho-spiritual healing tool, emotional intelligence and permission, fertility awareness & menstruation awareness, Chinese medicine, sacred sexuality, body psychotherapy & dance movement therapy, and a fine-tuned awareness of the spectrum of mental / emotional / spiritual experiences that humans can have as a general phenomenon and context to orient to.
Can you give us three staple tips on how we can release old patterns so we can open ourselves up towards health, vitality, and pleasure as a young woman?
- Learn about your body. Notice any patterns of shame or guilt that arise as you explore yourself and support yourself to own pleasure as your birthright.
- Address anything that you’ve been through that has impacted the vitality of your body, health, spirit and soul. Sometimes acknowledging the reality of something that has been hard for us is the beginning of healing.
- Have fun! Enjoy. Explore, play, know yourself, share with and receive from others when you want to and take full responsibility for your boundaries and desires.
What is the most favoured aspect of your role at Your Inner Power so far?
Seeing women light up when I talk about this area of our body being the centre of divinity, creative power, pleasure, and fun facts like the cervix being capable of having an orgasm. Education, permission, support and play brings out incredible things in women. I also really enjoy teaching, I’ve been teaching in one form or another for over 10 years and thoroughly enjoy working with people 1:1 and in groups, it’s some of the most inspiring work I’ve ever done and I’ve had incredible role models to help shape me.
How are you working towards your own personal development?
I’ve been engaging in personal development, almost obsessively, for a long time now. My main practice now is to engage in consistent practices that I know are helpful and healthy for me, and remember to take it easy and enjoy, to let myself have joy and play. My personality tends to be one of “always studying”, learning, growing, working, so part of my work is to allow myself to have fun, to play, to express myself and to have breaks from my studies and work. After a long history of engaging in my own counselling, supervision, training, studying, constant reading, bodywork and healing sessions for myself, I’ve learned to take a breather and come back to myself as one of the most important things that I’ve learned. I also regularly engage in meditation, time in nature, time with a funny and silly group of friends who I am so grateful for, and 5 Rhythms dance to keep me clear and available for my work, family, community, and connection to myself.
One hard lesson in life you have learned so far?
I am a person who likes “to know”. I am cerebral and driven in my nature. Learning how to surrender, in my body, to my emotional needs, to life events that were out of my control, has been one of the hardest lessons I’ve ever learned. And it’s something I have to continue to practice and may always be practising. Deepening my relationship to the unknown, the great mystery of life, is a constant and consistent theme in my life.
What are your preferred marketing methods for promoting the comprehensive programs you offer with Your Inner Power?
I have a multi-pronged stream of ways people find me and I really appreciate the connections that are available with technology. I engage frequently with my business on facebook, email, Instagram, and youtube. Many people find me on the web through searches. One of my favourite ways to market is to do podcasts, I LOVE getting notes from people all over the world and USA who found me through a podcast, it seems like the discussions I have on podcasts open people’s eyes to the incredible vast scope of this work and all the podcasts I do bring a lot of people toward me.
What does #BEYOUROWN mean to you?
#BEYOUROWN, to me, is all about sovereignty and clarity. I spent so much of my life trying to be something other than I was and it was painful. Not to mention stressful on my body and psyche. It’s so cliche to say but this whole concept of being who we actually are, allowing ourselves to be on a unique and wild journey of human life and expression, is what I gather from be your own.
What have you got planned throughout the rest of 2019?
Very exciting things in my business, I am opening my online courses to new groups and really love that work. I will be gearing up to make a big move in 2020 so much of my 2019 will be prepping for that. I’m also grateful to have some travel planned, and my fathers’ 60th birthday party which will surely be a smashing hit (my Dad inspires me with how he maintains his relationships and social life, he is a serious connector and parties more than I do!) Otherwise, my daily life and nourishment is way more important to me than huge plans and events.
My community, sense of purpose with my work, keeping my body and mind and spirit healthy have been my main focuses in life for years and knowing me, I’m sure that will continue through 2019.
