Theresa Ginter is the General Manager of Nita Lake Lodge in Whistler, B.C., a certified change management professional, and a registered health and transformational coach for individuals and groups. In her 14+ years spent coaching, directing and leading her own hotel management team, Theresa has seen burnout rates reach an all-time high.
When the high-pressure demands of her job and her own hustler mindset resulted in two back-to-back burnouts that set her health and career back, she realised that there had to be a better way to build the life she wanted doing the work she loved. Now Theresa is on a mission to help the next generation of high-achieving leaders to rise up without burning out. Using a holistic approach that blends leadership skills, healthy habits, and mindfulness Theresa helps you reach new levels of success and fulfilment without the personal trade-offs so you can experience transformation both in life and in the way you work.
Theresa has been recognised as a business leader in Whistler’s Profiles of Excellence, featured in Hotelier Magazine, and spoken at Women in Hospitality Leadership events like Empower Her. She also coaches individuals and teams on topics like leadership, creative problem solving using the Basadur Profile and LEGO ® SERIOUS PLAY ® methodology, personnel management, conflict resolution, and how to go from being a high-achiever to a high performer so you can create more success with less stress or go from exhausted to thriving.
Welcome Theresa, thank you for coming on board with us, can you introduce yourself to us?
Absolutely, I’m thrilled to be here! My name is Theresa, I am originally from Germany and moved to Canada just about 13 years ago and now call Whistler, BC my home. I’m a Health & Transformational Coach for high-achievers who are ready to experience more success with less stress, go from exhausted to thriving and start being a high-performer in a way that actually feels awesome. I’m serving my clients both through my private practice as well as am bringing my coaching to how I run a successful Boutique Hotel as the General Manager of Nita Lake Lodge. But it’s not all work for me, having time to enjoy the things I love is invaluable to me, I play Golf which to me is a walking meditation, I am engaged to be married in late summer 2019 and am obsessed with my two black cats.
Can you talk us through the path you have pathed to where you are now as a health & transformational leadership coach?
Growing up, I struggled with self-esteem and doubted that I had any ability or was capable to be good at something other than sports, but I finally realised in my late teens that if I put my mind to something I can achieve it and that I was great at inspiring others and people were following my lead and were seeking my guidance. This mindset pushed me to immigrate to a new country and put me on a fast career trajectory, becoming a GM of a boutique Hotel at age 29. Problem was I couldn’t stop and between the perfectionist and hustler attitude and the high demands of the job I burned myself out and experienced first hand what pushing yourself beyond your limits can do to you.
I was the poster child of success on the outside, but on the inside, I was a hot mess. I have always been a problem solver and I love working with people but I was so zapped out, I needed to step back and focus on myself. This is how I stumbled over a program offered by the Health Coach Institute to become a health & transformational coach (my way of problem solve myself – learn something new).
I signed up for personal health reasons and to re-group but it ignited my passion for coaching people. I also started to notice how many high-achievers struggle and ultimately burn-out or just can’t seem to stop and celebrate their success.
I knew I needed to follow this passion to help people achieve more by doing less, helping others change their mindset, bounce back from burnout and finally stop sacrificing their personal time and values in the name of success. There is a way to create the life we want doing the work we love and I feel it’s my sacred duty to help my clients do exactly that.
How are you helping your clients to build a life they truly want whilst doing the work they love?
I believe in a 3-pronged approach to leadership, mindfulness, and wellbeing. I always start this process by defining very clearly outlined goals that are aligned with personal values. By stepping into our inner powerhouse leader we can put ourselves back to #1 on the priority list, define clear boundaries and get more accomplished by taking less on. Say goodbye to the times where “no” did not exist in your vocabulary, if it is not a definite “yes” then it’s a “no.”
If we are zapped out and have low energy we simply cannot show up as our best self or make the impact we want to have both on ourselves and others. Wellbeing to me means looking at ways to create healthier habits and daily self-care ritual that allow us to bring more energy to our work and our lives. The number one excuse I get from clients that they cannot eat better, workout more or stop checking there e-mail first thing in the morning is that there isn’t enough time in the day. This is where the inner Leader helps them understand wellbeing equals increased productivity which equals more time for self-care. And yes it is really that simple, most of us know it but we do not do it. This is why the accountability I provide to my clients is priceless.
The last piece is all about our gut wisdom. Through mindfulness practice, we can reconnect with this innate ability that creates an unshakeable self-awareness enabling us to choose calmer ways of reacting and more confident ways of being. Simply said, we cannot control what other people do or even sometimes what happens in business, but we can become masterful of how we respond emotionally.
What is your most favoured aspect of what you do at Holistics Reimagined?
Seeing my clients transformation is truly what lifts me up the most. When I see them thrive for me that is the deepest level of fulfillment and I feel this sense of gratitude for being able to have been a part of their journey.
How is Holistics Reimagined funded and what was the start-up process like for you?
I am currently fully self-funded, starting up was full of up’s and downs and a self-discovery process within itself. I am still very much in early stages of my business but I cannot wait to see how I can continue to create growth both for my clients and for my Coaching and consulting practice Holistic’s Reimagined. I have big plans for the future and am grateful for what is yet to come.
Can you give us 3 tips for helping us to find that sweet balance between being productive and being impactful as a leader?
- Do Less. Controversial to what a lot of high achievers think (myself included) doing less is the key to greater productivity and higher impact as a Leader. Being the first one in and the last one out of the office, showing up at work sick and making it a competition on the most hours worked means you get a badge of honour will guarantee you to burnout and kill your productivity. Saying No to things that no longer serve you like not accepting another Board position will actually gain you more respect and thus increase your Impact.
- Practice radical self-care and self-love. We only get one body and one life to live. Making it a priority to be kind to yourself by taking time out’s, moving daily and putting food in your body that makes you feel awesome and energised is the ultimate act of self-love. If you want to be impactful as a Leader and be productive you have to be able to show up as your best self. If you are exhausted, miserable and sick it’s just not going to happen. This is about creating sustainable success and it starts by making yourself and your health both physically and mentally a priority.
- Done is better than perfect. I would be the first one to admit that perfection is part of my high-achiever trademark I had to let go off, admitting to making a mistake used to be so tough for me. What I came to realise on my journey is that not every decision as a leader is going to make everyone happy, procrastinating over its too long won’t help your productivity and making mistakes is part of the learning process. Just because you do things that are not perfect doesn’t mean you lose the impact as a leader. You cannot be productive if your focus is perfection, instead, try things, change them and share the failures you have learned from so others can do the same.
Can you share with us a particular career highlight so far?
It’s tough for me to just pick one, but the one that I am the proudest of is that I became a GM at age 29 with no previous hotel management experience or fancy degree and managed to more than double the Revenues of the business and lead the company from cash poor to cash flow becoming a well known and award-winning hotel.
How are you working towards your own personal development?
I am currently completing my Mastery level Certification in Transformational Coaching. Within this program I have bi-weekly mastermind calls with other Coaches to help push the business forward as well as I have weekly coaching calls. I am also excited to start up again with an Executive Coach this fall to help me with my personal and professional presence and keep growing as a person and in business.
Personal development to me also just means that we are always learning and growing, I listen to audio books and read a lot which I find super inspiring.
