Meet Tia Miers, an Australian based qualified naturopath with a passion for helping people achieve that amazing feeling of good health- by blending traditional naturopathic wisdom with up-to-date scientific research and a lot of love + care!
Specialising in women’s health, hormones, digestive disturbances, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and detoxification, we sat with Tia to talk about why she has such a strong belief in the use of food as medicine and self-love.
Hey Tia, can you introduce yourself to us?
I’m Tia Miers, a qualified Naturopath from the Gold Coast in Australia. I have a passion for helping women achieve that amazing feeling of good health! I do so with the use of herbal botanicals, nutritional supplements and dietary/lifestyle advice. I have a strong belief in the use of food as medicine and self-love.
I consult from the most beautiful clinic space inside ‘The Greenhouse Bathhouse’ and over Skype, if my patients are interstate. I usually specialise in women’s health, hormones, the digestive system and mood disorders.
Can you tell us a little bit about you and your career background as a naturopath?
I embarked on a career in the wellness industry after experiencing extreme hormonal imbalances coming off the oral contraceptive pill as a teenager. After many disheartening doctor visits and gynecologist appointments, I discovered the power of natural medicine and decided that I wanted to be able to help others in the same way. Herbal medicine + dietary and lifestyle changes are one of the best ways that we can support ourselves naturally.
In my practice I understand that every person is unique; each treatment plan is formulated to meet specific needs of the individual. I also acknowledge that every system within the body is connected and that mental, emotional, spiritual and environmental influences can significantly affect wellbeing. Through the use of herbal medicines derived from nature and the implementation of healthy lifestyle practices, the bodies innate healing process is supported. This leads too amazing long-term good health and energy!
Would you like to share with us your love for herbal medicine?
Herbal medicine is one of the most beautiful ways that we can support our bodies. Every single day herbal medicine amazes me- the therapeutic benefits that herbal botanicals have within the body is so special! In my clinical experience, I have seen herbs regulate menstrual cycles, eliminate PMS (premenstrual syndrome), reduce/eliminate feelings of anxiety, boost mood/lift depression, increase energy, boost the metabolism to support weight loss, regulate the thyroid plus so many more amazing things.
Herbal medicine has a similar activity within our bodies as allopathic pharmaceuticals- however, they are a lot gentler and have reduced side effects.
Can you tell us what courses or workshops you attended as a qualified naturopath?
I studied at Endeavour College of Natural Health- completing a Bachelor of Health Science. I have also completed varies iridology courses, attend self-love/hormone workshops regularly and training seminars.
How are you blending traditional naturopathic wisdom with up-to-date scientific research?’
I recently spent time volunteering in India where I learned a lot about traditional herbal medicine and Ayurvedic healing practices. I also attend training seminars regularly- this allows me to keep up to date with the latest scientific herbal research. I am also the biggest bookworm as I am constantly reading and learning! I love the blend both science + ancient wisdom as I feel as though we have lost connection with the basic pillars of health.
Health has become so complicated and scientific that we can lose sight of the most powerful medicines for vibrant, happy life exist right before us.
Before worrying about the latest health fads + gimmicky wellness products, don’t lose sight of the simple pearls of wisdom and everyday pillars of Mother Nature’s eternal health recipe. Connect with the earth, drink plenty of water, get regular sunlight exposure, breathe in fresh, clean air + eat local fresh organic foods. the simplest things are always the best.
You specialise in areas such as women’s health, digestive disturbances as well as depression and detoxification. However what is your most favourite aspect of what you do?
My favourite aspect of what I do is improving someone’s quality of life, health, and wellbeing. I love working with young women to help regulate hormones, reduce PMS and to improve their relationships that they have with themselves.
The most rewarding moment in your personal life?
Taking the leap and opening my own clinic- this was a huge decision for me and easily the best decision I have ever made. I am so proud of myself. All of my study and hard work has definitely paid off.
Have you ever had a mentor? If so how has this benefitted, you to grow?
Katrina Ellis was my mentor; she is such an intelligent beautiful lady. She taught me so much and I am so grateful for the time that we spent together. It allowed me to build my confidence as a practitioner and grow.
What outlets do use to market your brand?
I use Instagram to market my brand, but I find ‘word of mouth’ from existing patients is my most effective marketing tool.
Which methods are you using to build your audience and expand your network?
I am using collaborations with social media influences and other small businesses to build and expand my network. I am also currently organising a hormone/PMS workshop so I can educate and empower women on a larger scale.
What is the best piece of advice you have received to date?
My dad gives me the best advice, he once said to me to “find a job that you love and you will never have to work again,” and this is exactly what I have done. I enjoy going to the clinic every day and love helping others on their wellness journey.
What is the number 1 critical lesson you have learned along your path to success?
A critical lesson that I have learned is too not allow my work to consume me. Having so much passion and love for my work makes it very difficult for me to switch off I am always in work mode. I find myself answering emails late at night, writing meal plans and researching. I have made a very conscious effort as of late to not do these things outside of work hours otherwise it can lead to me feeling quite drained.
Which other leading entrepreneurs and leading female pioneers do you also admire and why?
Kate Reardon currently known as the Natural Medicine Queen. I have been a fangirl for years now! Kate is the founder of ‘Natural Instinct Healing’ a health and detox retreat in Bali.
She is very connected to the mind, body, and spirit to promote healing. She writes the book ‘The essential cleanse’ and I highly recommend it. Kate has also personally helped me develop a very kind and loving relationship with myself after attending one of her workshops for that, I am forever grateful.
Ellie Bullen, a nutritionist who is spreading a very powerful message to eat more plants. She has published a cookbook which is now an Australian bestseller! Ellie has always been a huge inspiration of mine, everything she touches turns to gold.
What Youtube or online space channels are you watching currently?
I am currently watching Ted Talks on YouTube and I highly recommend them. They are short talks from very passionate individuals.
What is a good article or book you have read recently?
‘Ancient Wisdom For Modern Health’ written by Mark Bunn. The message he promotes through his book is so simple yet so effective for health!
What does your Podcast playlist look like?
A lot of health and meditation podcasts. However, my favourites so far are FX Medicine which is a functional medicine podcast- so informative and educational. Then there is also the Live Awake podcast with Sarah Blondin, that is based on self-love and guided meditations, my go-to when feeling disconnected from myself or stressed
What does success look like in your eyes?
Happiness and health is a success in my eyes, whilst also I think that success is also improving my patient’s wellbeing and quality of life.
What does #BEYOUROWN mean to you?
It means to be confident and comfortable with who you are as a person. Follow your passions, chase your dreams and have integrity with pure intentions.
Lastly, what is next for you throughout 2018?
I am currently working on my own product range for the clinic and I cannot wait for it to be released. I am also running hormone and PMS workshops. It is a very exciting year ahead.
