Tyler, originally from Dallas, currently resides in Shreveport, Louisiana alongside his wife, Jalie, and son, Dominion Caleb. In their free time, they enjoy nature walks, coffee shops, trips to the beach, and spending the evening in the city.

Thank you for interviewing with us today, can you introduce yourself to us?

It’s an honour to have this conversation with you. I’m a leadership and life coach born and raised in Dallas, however, now based in Shreveport, Louisiana. I have a wonderful wife and son, whom I love so dearly. I’m the CEO of Valor Coaching Agency and love what I do. It’s a joy to serve others in their journey.

Can you take us through your journey to where you are now?

Absolutely. When I began my career in leadership, I had no idea how easy it was to feel lonely. I don’t believe it has to be this way, but the pursuit throws natural challenges to you. I assumed that when I began to pursue this path that I would quickly be surrounded by peers and mentors in my corner. In my case, and many others that I partner with, this wasn’t entirely the case. Some experience this even decades later.

I spent 12 years pastoring and, in that arena, I’ve had the honour of mentoring many leaders along the way. On many occasions, I have seen first-hand how lonely leadership can easily be. Years ago, I devoted my life to serving our current and future leaders. I just want to do my part in contributing to a society that our kids and beyond can live in. Having my firstborn completely changed the way I look at the future. I’m more determined than ever to equip and encourage leaders of courage, hence the name ‘Valor’. Now, Valor Coaching Agency serves to do just that. Whether it be leaders in their first year, or those who have spent the majority of their lives doing so, we are in their corner.

Since starting, have you made any changes to your business model?

Definitely. Although the values and heartbeat have remained the same, the methods have evolved and re-shaped to serve that season and demands. This doesn’t mean that we are ever-changing and throwing your clients and team overboard, rather ever-growing to serve even more effectively and efficiently. Also, the longer you build, the more you discover elements of you that you didn’t know you enjoyed, were gifted at, or found such success in. And as your team grows, you utilise their passions and skillsets, as well. We evolve as it is necessary, not out of impulse. Change is here to stay. Better yet, grow.

Have you ever had a mentor? If so how has this benefitted you either personally or professionally?

Mentors change everything. I’m grateful that early on in my journey I realised the power

of having a mentor. I, as quickly as possible, found a couple and gleaned from them all that I could. Mentorship is something that we never graduate from. It’s the ecosystem of fulfilment, growth, and contribution.

I’ve had (and still have) mentors in areas for finances, marriage, health, fatherhood, leadership, communication, soul matters, spiritual growth, and the list goes on. I’ve understood for a long time now that I don’t have it all figured out. I don’t have the corner market on life and career. I must lean in to someone who has gone before me to learn and grow as necessary. Mentorship has strengthened my character tremendously. In my opinion and with conviction, there is no supplement for this.

What outlets do use for marketing?

First and foremost, word of mouth. Last time I checked, the statistics still show it gives the greatest return. After that, at the moment, I utilise ads on the major platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Also, I give and wear branded merchandise, distribute QR code cards publicly, work local vendor/trade shows with full-setup, network with local businesses in our building and with clients, send text and email blasts. I am also involved in a couple of coaching networks, sponsor local events, and a few misc. areas. A strength and a fault, at times, is that we are constantly trying new things. When it works, it works. And vice-versa. We’d rather give it a shot then not at all.

Which methods are you using to build your own support network?

As hard as it might be, I’m putting myself out there in different circles when there’s an open door. As introverted as I might be at the core, I believe in the power of relationships. I can’t assume someone else is going to pursue and cultivate the relationships. They might be feeling exactly what I might be. Someone has to make the move. I just believe that if you want support, friendships, and mentorship, you must make the move. The right ones will work out and those that aren’t meant to be will not. I believe in networking professionally online, without a doubt. However, there’s something powerful about gaining a true support network.

What is the best piece of business advice you have received to date?

Keep it about them.

If you don’t quit, you win.

Honor and excellence will always succeed, serve, and fulfil.

How do you create an evenly balanced work and personal life?

Like many entrepreneurs and leaders, this is something that I must have constant help with. Some actions that have helped/are helping me are: managing my time well, scheduling debrief time post-work, having a full day of rest, prioritising my social life, pursuing a hobby, getting therapy, having digital boundaries, saying “no” more often, waking up earlier to have a slower morning, allowing my wife to speak open and honestly to me, and setting personal goals.

Name a seminal point in your career so far?

Years ago, a seasoned leader that I mentored said, “When I look back in my corner, I know that I have you.”. This moment changed everything for me in my pursuit of serving leaders. I understand what it’s like to be surrounded by the masses and my loneliness be at an all-time high. The more leaders I’ve been around and served over the years, the more common I find this struggle to be. What an honour and joy it is to be in someone’s corner.

What gives you ultimate career satisfaction?

When those I serve find just that, including my family at home.

Are there any leading entrepreneurs or SME leaders that you admire and if so, why?

John Maxwell because of his heart to serve as many leaders as possible until his final breath. I have a ton of admiration for his faith in Jesus, as well.

Dustin Bates because of his endurance and integrity through storms beyond comprehension. I’ll forever be grateful for his example and mentorship.

To rapid-fire a few more that the viewers might be familiar with: Ed Mylett, Sam Chand, Daymond John, Gary Vaynerchuk, Donald Miller, Brendon Burchard, Brené Brown, Kevin Hart, Mel Robbins, Dr. Henry Cloud, Oprah, Lee Cockerell, Tyler Perry, Mark Cuban, and T.D. Jakes.

How do you define your own success?

My family knowing me, being faithful to the dreams that God put in my heart, and leaving our society better than I found it.

Finally, What can we expect from you this year?

Valor is preparing to build out an online leadership academy, which is the first phase to our larger model of a brick & mortar multi-site leadership academy. In the meantime, we will continue with our current model of 1×1 coaching, team-workshops, weekly group coaching, and keynote sessions.

We will continue to scale the team internally to prepare for our next moves. A strong team is something that I couldn’t do it without. We will continue to partner with more clients as our current model permits. We’ll continue to do our best to give all that we can and have a lot of fun doing so.
