In our fourth installment of our 6 part campaign, we present Lisa Marie Posso to talk about what it means to her to BE YOUR OWN Boss in the 21st century.
I am 25 years old, originally from Tampa, FL. In high school I began throwing and promoting teen parties. By the time I graduated, thousands of people were attending them. In college, I continued promoting events and music festivals. When EDM started to take off I jumped into artist relations roles and built a solid network of DJ and music industry contacts throughout the state of FL. In 2012 health issues forced me to move back to Tampa from college. I hated it. I hated being home again after almost 2 years of being independent.
I’ve always lived in my own world, doing what I want to do, when I wanted to do it but this time was different. Whilst walking out of the house my dad shouted, “If you leave right now do not ever ask me for another penny.” This was terrifying – I was 19 and financially dependent on him but I made the choice to fill my car and head to Miami.
Once there I found a VIP services job in nightlife. After getting settled I started school again but never fully had my head in it. I have an entrepreneurial mind set and I just wanted to learn from experience rather than being taught. In August 2015, through a mutual friend I met 8x Grammy award-winning producer Skrillex. From the second I met him there was an instant bond – almost like the big brother I never had and wanted to protect. He hired me the same day I met him and I went on to tour the world with him as his executive assistant. I spent the summer of 2016 freelancing in artist management and then re-joined Skrillex’s team that fall as the event manager of his record label and clothing line, OWSLA.
In June 2017 I parted ways with OWSLA and started my company, Lisa Marie Projects. I specialise in experiential events and celebrity personal assistance. It was important for me to incorporate “projects” into my name because I don’t want to be limited to events. I want to be able to do and specialise in whatever I want, hopefully, one day that will include producing!
It was very hard for me to get settled in Los Angeles. I come from a small town where people get married right out of high school and are very relationship driven. I had a boyfriend back to back and moving here was the first time I had been single in my life. It was difficult to be alone in this big city but I think that alone timing pushed me to focus on myself and my goals which is what I needed and why I’m where I am now.
I was lonely, scared and insecure, but all of that helped develop and shape the independent woman I am now. I think the saying “Don’t want a man, don’t need a man,” is very prevalent in my life because I am just so ecstatic to be waking up every day and working on projects that I love. People will tell you that it’s “time” to settle down, and get married, and get pregnant but we are all on our own clock. There is no right time, but there are a time that’s right for you, and that’s what you’ll figure out on your own journey.
To me, BE YOUR OWN Boss in the 21st century mean’s believing in your own hustle. You have to do whatever, whenever, as long as you trust yourself in the process. People are making a living off of the internet and from their phones. The opportunities to #BEYOUROWN are ENDLESS.
