Astrology – It’s Not What You Think It Is By Cassandra Eve

Most of you will have read your stars at some point. Yet did you know that popular astrology is limited by its collective perspective? It contributes to some of the most common misconceptions about astrology that prevent us accessing its wisdom, so relevant in your life and to our changing times.

Astrology is an ancient esoteric science with its roots embedded in the 5000-year-old Babylonian culture. This potent system that links the stars with our human lives has evolved from being a fatalistic predictive art to a study of human nature and how we are intricately linked into the rhythms of the planets. Astrology now reaches into the depths of our individuality, the human psyche. It’s a fascinating exploration of the underlying energies within us that inspire, motivate, and challenge us to be more and the universal rhythms that are calling us to evolve.

Misconception 1: Astrology predicts events

In the last fifty years, science and astrology have begun to meet. Quantum physics opens our understanding to the new science of energy. It posits that what we see as matter is simply energy vibrating at different frequencies. In the quantum field, at the very core of matter, nothing is fixed. We live in a field of infinite possibilities. This field contains the energy of the planets, constantly ‘communicating’ with us. Just as we are walking around in an energetic field of satellite communications, mobile phone signals, background radiation and the like – all invisible to us – we are constantly picking up energy communication from the planets. We experience this as intuition, synchronicity, a sixth sense or irrational knowing, or what we might simply call ‘being in the right place at the right time’.

We are subtly influenced by the tides of energy of which we are part. A professional astrologer understands these tides, where their peaks and troughs play out in your life. To think astrology is predictive of events is to disregard our capacity of choice, yet energy potentials can be seen. Astrology is not a psychic art; it’s an in-depth study of the relationship between the energy of the universe and your fullest creative potential as a human being.

Misconception 2: You are fated to behave just like your star sign

Maybe you’ve had the experience of reading about your star sign and thinking ‘That’s so me’? Or maybe, like me, you read it as a teenager and thought “Mmm that’s kind of who I am but I’m a lot more emotional than that’, or something similar? There’s a reason for this. We are not just our star sign! Our individual psyche is comprised of all twelve zodiac signs in different ratios. So, you might be what’s known as an Aries star sign because you were born when the Sun was passing through Aries.

Yet your Moon sign – how you feel, emotionally connect to your family, and navigate your daily life, could be in Libra – the opposite sign to Aries. Mercury, how you think and communicate, could be in another, radically different, zodiac sign. As could Venus, the planet signifying love and partnership, and your creative potential; as could Mars, the planet of will and drive. It’s a complex picture, even without looking at the interrelationship of these energies within you. For just like our human relationships, they can be harmonious or challenging i.e., different aspects of yourself wanting different things.

Misconception 3: Your natal chart stays the same through a lifetime

Every month, we witness the changing light and energy of the Moon travelling around the Earth over 29.5 days. Its influence on the ocean tides, women’s menstrual cycle and as some evidence suggests our mental health is clear. As the Moon circuits the Earth this changing light is reflected in changing potentials in your birth chart, and therefore within you. It’s the same with other orbiting planets, both fast and slow-moving.

They vibrate with different conditions for your self-expression and growth. Your energetic template, your full creative potential, is always there; much like an apple tree having the template to produce tasty apples. Yet the conditions of growth through a lifetime, and your reactions and responses to them, determine how well you express and embody that potential. With an apple tree, the soil, the weather, the impact of animals, the growers care of the tree, and so on, influence the tree’s capacity to produce the sweetest, juiciest apples.  Within you and your life, the planetary rhythms reflect your emerging possibilities, along with the timing of opportunities and challenges to living your fullest potential.
