There is no easy way to start the conversation around the cost-of-living crisis and how it is transforming, altering and impacting all our lives in one way or another and maybe on many levels it’s not a conversation that’s require, perhaps its time to question? But not question why is this happening because it is, but more how can we navigate these treacherous waters without going under, how can we find balance and ride the waves that we often feel consume us? Charles Darwin said ‘’it’s not the strongest or the most intelligent of the species that survive its those most adaptive to change’’ and right now beginning to change and adapt quickly to the situation will allow a smoother journey through these next few months.
Worrying about money has a massive impact on our wellbeing, mental health and often our physical health and in turn having poor mental wellbeing or physical wellbeing can impact on our ability to earn money so this cycle can often leave us feeling lost, trapped or both and this is something we must really pay attention to.
Debts, the dreaded letters through the mailbox, the phone calls and the collection agencies applying pressure for payments and missed payments a situation over 70% of people have experienced at some point in their lifetime an additional stress we could all do without during these times.
The fact of the matter is the cost-of-living crisis has impacted us in every aspect of life as we know it the cost of food, electric, gas, fuel, mortgages, rent, travel and everything else in between, so if we can’t get away from it what can we do to strengthen your mind, your life and your position during these times;
Get Organised
Financial organisation is the first step, this is going to help you stay on top of life. Go through your bank statements make sure you have no unused items or subscriptions that you are still paying for.
Write down a list of your regular bills, direct debits and standing orders, this will allow you to clearly identify when money is due and the amount ‘’ you can’t fix what you can’t see’’.
If you have any bills, you feel you won’t make payment on then face your fears sooner rather than later, call the company and make alternative arrangement or ask for reduced payments for a temporary time period. Most companies are very accommodating and it will keep the proverbial wolves from the door and give you peace of mind.
Keep your life active
Having an active life will help maintain a strong mindset, read books, spend time with friends, go walks, cycle, jog or exercise of any kind, do activities that bring you joy these don’t have to cost money often the things that are enjoyed most in life are free.
Communication
Communicating clearly with friends, family and partners can play a key role in assisting with finances and mental health strength and improvements. Often things kept to yourself can compound and build up causing stress and further delay in finding an adequate solution, so talk it out and work it out.
Side Hustles
Many of you picked up an arts and craft project during the pandemic lockdowns and now is a great time to monetise these new found skills. Advertising your projects on social media platforms or free local marketplaces can be a great way to earn an extra income.
Things to limit
There are many things in life that if you limit or take time away from it will allow your mind and finances to thrive. Cut back on or cut out alcohol as this can be a catalyst for depression and can make issues seem magnified. Steer clear of people that have a problem for every solution, negative nellies and people that generally drain your good energy. Take some time away from the media as often the news reports the bad things that can add to our stresses.
‘’in life you are not responsible for the whole thing just your part in it’’ this is an epic quote and I think its really trying to tell point out that you have to take responsibility for your own life and where possible cut out the distractions so you can focus on your part you play in your own life. Stay focused and determined, take each day as it comes but plan ahead, be grateful for what you have and visualise the future you want to achieve.
