Formula 1, Victoria
Formula 1 is an international motor racing sport that has been held in Australia since 1985. It was originally held in Adelaide but was moved to Melbourne for the 1996 race where it has been held ever since. The event takes place at the Albert Park Lake street circuit and the cars can be heard all around the city. Champions such as Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Jensen Button, Sebastian Vettel, and Ayrton Senna have all raced and mounted the podium there. The race has a great atmosphere to it and is definitely worth checking out if you are in Melbourne at the right time of year.
Sydney Royal Easter Show, New South Wales
One of the biggest ticketed events in the world, the Sydney Royal Easter Show is also one of the country’s oldest events that was first held in 1823. The event runs for about 12 days at the Sydney Showground at the Sydney Olympic Park and is attended by thousands of people over that time. It is also a diverse event with many different competitions held including wood chopping, cooking, and photography. Organisers have tried to keep the feel and traditions of Australians alive since the event first began and its ongoing popularity has ensured that it does.
Morphettville Races, South Australia
The Morphettville races, located in South Australia, are home to many important thoroughbred horseracing events throughout the year. The main event though is the SAJC Autumn Carnival which takes place in April every year. It has four major Group 1 races which makes horse racing in Morphettville Racecourse one of the major events in South Australia. Opened in 1873, the races have become an integral part of the sporting community in South Australia and has seen many famous winners over the years such as Black Caviar in 2012 and Rose of Kingston in 1982.
Adelaide Fringe Festival, South Australia
Known as just the Adelaide Fringe, this is one of the largest festivals in the world. this multi-arts event is extremely diverse with its musical showcases which include everything from circus to cabaret to jazz and rock. The event goes for four weeks beginning at the end of February. The whole city of Adelaide becomes one giant party and the atmosphere is that of pure fun and happiness. Head on over to Adelaide during this time as there is something for everyone during this truly amazing event.
AFL Grand Final, Victoria
Australian Rules Football is one of the major Australian sports. When September comes around, it is time for the AFL Grand Final where the top two teams compete for the Premiership Flag. The Grand Final is played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and has been since 1902. The pre-match entertainment includes a parade the day before where music is played and past and present champions of the game make an appearance. Just before the main game which is about 2 pm AEST, there are musical lineups from both local and international performers. If you want to witness something truly Australian then the AFL Grand Final is an event worth attending.
