Making a baby is one of those steps in life that can take time, energy, and ball all of your hopes and dreams into one thing. The thing is, making a baby isn’t something that happens with the click of a finger. Making a baby is not actually that easy to do, especially when you find out that 10 to 15% of couples find it difficult to conceive in the first 12 months. You only have a 25% shot of conception with every cycle, and that means that if you have any increased facility concerns, you might be looking for ways to lower your stress and stay optimistic.
Whether you have been trying to make a baby for a few months, or you are already looking into in vitro fertilization in the first few weeks, you need to learn how to take a breath, take a step back and look at the bigger picture. It’s easy to say that when the feelings of broodiness can be all-consuming, but here are some positivity tips so that while you’re trying to conceive you’re having fun and not stressing out.
- Avoid negative energy vampires. Another cycle has come and gone and another test is negative. It’s okay. You might conceive within the first year and that’s quite normal to take a few months. If your pregnancy test was negative just now, it won’t always be negative – things will work out. This is a process that can make you more impatient than you ever have been but it’s a process that you want to trust. A negative test is not a failure, it’s simply just the way your body is telling you but now it’s not the right time.
- Take a break from all the process. This doesn’t mean you take a break from trying to conceive, but it means that you get out of the baby forums online, you stop using ovulation prediction kits, you stop tracking everything. Take it easy and enjoy spending time together. After a couple of months of obsessing over conception, sex can feel like a chore. And it should never feel like a chore.
- Keep yourself busy. Constant overthinking about every single sign of a possible symptom can drive you crazy. Focus on keeping yourself occupied and meet up with friends. Enrol in classes, deep dive into your job or begin a new hobby. Find something that you can cherish so much that really overtakes you, because all of a sudden it will come up on test day and that test will be the positive one.
- Test just once. A negative test can be soul destroying, especially when you’ve been trying for a baby for a little while. You’ll know when your period is due, so just pee on one stick on one day of the month. Don’t start taking pregnancy tests the minute your body is ovulating – it only crushes hopes and dreams.
