Personal growth books are my thing. At the young age of 16 years old, my mother gave me my first “self-help” book. From that day, everything changed. My mentality changed. I started my obsession with perfecting self-success and motivating others around me.
I am eternally grateful for that first book “The Success Principles” by Jack Canfield. It is my holy bible, and it forever will be! Since then I’ve read countless books on personal growth, listened to hundreds of podcasts and audiobooks on the subject, and even started my own self-empowerment online magazine and podcast called MIMIBEE.
I owe my success to everything I’ve learned about myself through reading. Today, I’ll be sharing with you the top 5 things I’ve been taught through “self-help” books.
Figure out what you want and visualise it
Our brains do most things without our conscious support, and visualising works in a way that we aren’t really aware of. Visualization focuses your brain by programming its RAS (reticular activating system) to start noticing important things, people, and opportunities as resources that were once unnoticed. Scientifically, your brain sees absolutely no difference between visualizing something and physically doing it. How crazy is that? Visualizing literally turns on the creative powers of your subconscious mind and looks for opportunities as you live your day-to-day life.
Some psychologists have even claimed that one hour of intense visualisation is equal to seven hours of physical effort. If you are constantly visualizing and acting as if you’ve already reached that goal of where you want to be, you are going to unexpectedly start doing things that will take you there. Start to think, act, talk, dress, and feel like the person you are striving towards being. You need to exude self-confidence and assurance in yourself, and this combination is a foolproof plan to get there.
Embrace the feeling of being uncomfortable
If you don’t change what you do, your life won’t change. Sounds simple, right? Most of us live in a state of being comfortable in all areas of our life. We eat the same foods, keep the same job, and hang out with the same friends. How do we expect to do the same things and get a different result? It’s insanity! If you want lasting change you’re going to have to do things that are out of your comfort zone. Change your environment, break up with that lying boyfriend of yours, start a boxing class, put your alarm on for 6am and work on that side hustle.
Take responsibility for your life
This one is massive. Stop playing the victim. You are completely responsible for your current life situation. You are responsible for your weight, your bank account balance, your relationships, and your health. It’s all on you! Yes, there are certain things that are out of your control – like disease and accidents. But you are in control of how you react to what happens to you. The second you take ownership for the position you’re currently in is the second you’ll have the power to change it. Simply being aware that you are in complete control of how your life plays out is the game-changer.
You are an average of the 5 people you surround yourself with most
Think about the closest people in your life. Are they happy, positive people? Are they in healthy relationships? Are they passionate about their work? How much money are they making? There’s this reoccurring theory that I’ve read in many books, and it’s that you are an average of the 5 people closest to you. If you are hanging around millionaires, you’re likely making 6 figures a year. If you hang around pessimists that go out drinking 4 times a week and hate their lives, likely you will also fall into that category. If you want to see a positive change in yourself, look around you. Who are you spending the most time with?
Believe in yourself
Nothing in the world is more important than this. Love yourself. Believe in yourself. Be your own #1 fan. Create change in your life because you believe you are worthy and capable of it. And guess what? You are.
